Cody Balmer, a 38-year-old Harrisburg resident, has been identified as the suspect in the arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning while Shapiro, his family, and guests were asleep. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the fire caused significant damage to the mansion, particularly in the dining and piano rooms.

Balmer allegedly scaled the fence surrounding the governor’s residence, broke windows using a hammer, and ignited fires with homemade incendiary devices. According to an affidavit, he had a “methodical plan” and was in and out of the property within minutes. Following the attack, Balmer surrendered to authorities and confessed to starting the fires. He also admitted that if he had encountered Governor Shapiro during the break-in, he would have assaulted him with a hammer.
Balmer faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated arson, terrorism, and burglary. His motives remain unclear, though investigators are examining his background and social media activity for potential insights. Some reports suggest Balmer harboured animosity toward Shapiro, who is a prominent Democrat and potential 2028 presidential candidate.
Governor Shapiro expressed gratitude for law enforcement and first responders who ensured his family’s safety. He also condemned the growing trend of political violence in the U.S., calling for an end to such acts.
The FBI is assisting state police in the investigation, and federal charges may be filed against Balmer as the case develops.
