In a tragic development, former LSU wide receiver and 2025 NFL Draft prospect Kyren Lacy was found dead on Saturday night in a Houston hotel room. He was 24 years old. The news was confirmed by a family member to Baton Rouge’s WAFB-TV and by an LSU official to ESPN on Sunday morning.
Authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected, with initial investigations pointing to suicide as the cause of death.
Legal Troubles Before His Death
Lacy’s death comes just days before he was scheduled to appear before a Louisiana grand jury regarding a fatal car accident that occurred in December 2024. The crash, which claimed the life of 78-year-old Marine veteran Herman Hall, resulted in Lacy facing charges of negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving.
According to police reports, Lacy was allegedly driving a 2023 Dodge Charger at high speeds in a no-passing zone on Louisiana Highway 20 when his actions forced other vehicles into a head-on collision. Lacy reportedly fled the scene without rendering aid or reporting the incident.
The crash led to Hall’s death and left Hall’s wife severely injured. Lacy turned himself into authorities in January 2025 and was released on a $151,000 bond. The grand jury hearing for this case was set to begin on Monday, April 14.
Promising Career Cut Short
Kyren Lacy had been a standout player for LSU after transferring from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2022. In his final season with the Tigers, he recorded 58 receptions for 866 yards and nine touchdowns, leading the team in scoring. Known for his size, speed, and strong hands, Lacy had garnered attention from NFL scouts and was projected as a mid-to-late-round pick in the upcoming draft.
Despite his legal troubles, Lacy participated in LSU’s Pro Day in March, showcasing his athleticism and skills to NFL teams. He had declared for the draft just two days after the December crash but did not play in LSU’s Texas Bowl victory over Baylor.
