HBO has confirmed the cast for its upcoming Harry Potter television series. After months of speculation, the streaming service has revealed the actors who will play important roles, including Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Rubeus Hagrid, and Minerva McGonagall. This series promises a new yet faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books.
John Lithgow, known for his roles in “The Crown” and “Dexter,” will play Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow’s experience adds weight to this role, following Richard Harris and Michael Gambon from the original films. Lithgow expressed his excitement about playing Dumbledore, calling it a “total surprise” and a serious responsibility.
Janet McTeer, a two-time Academy Award nominee, will portray Professor Minerva McGonagall. McTeer’s strong presence makes her a great choice to follow Dame Maggie Smith, ensuring that the Transfiguration professor remains a fan favourite.
Paapa Essiedu, recognized for his BAFTA-nominated work in “I May Destroy You,” has been cast as Severus Snape. Essiedu’s selection suggests a new direction for the complex character, previously played by the late Alan Rickman. Fans look forward to seeing how Essiedu will add new depth to Snape.
Nick Frost, known for “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz,” will take on Rubeus Hagrid, the beloved half-giant and Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. Frost’s humour is expected to shine in this critical role, which was played by the late Robbie Coltrane.
The cast also includes Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, rounding out the confirmed Hogwarts staff. Thallon’s work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Whitehouse’s background in comedy add talent to the ensemble.
The casting for Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley is not yet revealed, but HBO had an open casting call that drew over 30,000 hopefuls. Filming is set to start in the summer of 2025, with the series expected to premiere in 2026. Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Mark Mylod will direct several episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman will also be executive producers to ensure the series stays true to the original stories.
