U.S. Removes Commander of Greenland Space Base Colonel Susan Meyers After Controversial Email

The Trump administration has dismissed Colonel Susannah Meyers, the commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, following revelations that she sent an email contradicting Vice President JD Vance’s remarks during his recent visit to the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

The decision was announced on Thursday, April 10, 2025, by the U.S. Space Force, citing a “loss of confidence in her leadership capabilities.”

The Controversial Email

Meyers’ dismissal stems from an email she circulated to base personnel shortly after Vice President Vance’s visit in late March. In the email, Meyers expressed her disagreement with Vance’s comments regarding Denmark’s management of Greenland and distanced the base from his statements.

Vance had suggested that Greenland should pursue independence from Denmark and implied that the United States would negotiate with Greenland directly to assume control of the territory. Meyers countered these remarks, stating that they did not reflect the sentiments of Pituffik Space Base.

“I do not claim to fully grasp the current political landscape,” Meyers wrote in her email, “but I can say that the concerns raised by Vice President Vance do not represent the sentiments of this base.” Her message also reaffirmed support for Greenland’s ties with Denmark, a NATO ally.

The Administration’s Response

The Pentagon swiftly condemned Meyers’ actions as undermining civilian oversight and disrupting President Trump’s agenda. Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated on social media: “Actions that undermine the chain of command or subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense.”

Colonel Kenneth Klock, commander of Space Base Delta 1 in Colorado Springs, relieved Meyers of her duties and appointed Colonel Shawn Lee as her replacement.

The Space Force emphasized that commanders are expected to uphold nonpartisan behaviour and maintain the highest standards of conduct while performing their duties.

Defense Department Chief of Staff Joe Kasper reiterated this principle, describing civilian control of the military as foundational to U.S. armed forces.

Strategic Implications

Meyers’ removal highlights ongoing tensions surrounding U.S. ambitions in Greenland. President Trump has repeatedly expressed intentions to acquire Greenland for national security purposes, citing its strategic location in the Arctic.

Vice President Vance’s visit was part of this broader initiative, which has sparked heated exchanges between Washington and Copenhagen. Denmark has consistently opposed U.S. attempts to annex Greenland, while many Greenlanders have expressed a desire for independence.

The dismissal also reflects broader efforts by the Trump administration to enforce loyalty among military leaders amid its controversial foreign policy moves. Meyers’ firing follows a series of terminations targeting senior military officials who have challenged or deviated from official messaging.

  1. I admire the Colonel for sticking to her beliefs. Never met the lady but I know she’s an outstanding lady. I wish her the best.
